Prevent Tooth Decay and Cavities
Types of Teeth Cleanings
The prophylactic cleaning is referred to as a “prophy”. It is a routine teeth cleaning that involves removing plaque, and light to moderate levels of calculus (tartar) to prevent gingivitis. Without proper cleaning, this develops into gum swelling and bleeding which leads to periodontitis; the most advanced stage of gum disease. A professional dental cleaning can prevent this and tooth decay.
A full mouth debridement consist of removing large amounts of plaque and calculus which can obstruct the doctor’s ability to conduct an accurate clinical exam. The tartar needs to be removed before completing the exam. If there is excessive bleeding, then the exam needs to be completed in a separate visit. Patients who need this type of cleaning usually only suffer from gingivitis (inflammation of the gum) due to the supra gingival tartar build up.
Scaling and Root planning (or better known as a deep cleaning) is used to treat patients suffering from periodontitis. This kind of tarter build-up under the gums can lead to bone loss if left untreated. It is a cleaning that involves using local anesthesia, and sometimes antibiotics to perform the cleaning. In some cases, this type of cleaning may require an additional visit. A deep cleaning reduces inflammation and infection as well as prevent further bone loss and mobility.
